How To Run Memory Diagnostics for Windows 10

In Windows 10 when you experience things like random reboots,freezing of your computer or when applications run very slow.

On facing such issues the basic thing to check is your memory and run a diagnostic on your PC.Windows has its own Memory Diagnostic tool to check your PC’s memory problems.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to run the Diagnostics:

STEP 1: Open Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Windows Memory Diagnostic or click Run and type mdsched.exe
Click the Restart now and check problems option.


STEP 2: Now after the reboot you will end up in the Diagnostics environment.

Here you will see 3 options: Standard,Basic and Extended with description of tests conducted in each of the three options


After selecting the options Click on F10 to Apply so that the scan will start

Checking Scan Results

As soon as the scan is completed the computer will restart automatically . To see the results we have to use the Event Viewer

To do this go to

  1. Start and search for Event Viewer
  2. Expand the Windows Logs
  3. Right-click on System and click on Find
  4. Type MemoryDiagnostics-Results and click Find Nexteventviewer-memorydiagnostic-search

On Event Viewer click on MemoryDiagnostics source and check out the message.If the result reads “The Windows Memory Diagnostic tested the computer’s memory and detected no errors,” then you can discard memory as the problem.


If the message displays one or more errors then memory is the cause for your computer issues.
