How To Use System File Checker to Repair Files on Windows 10

If you notice some random errors on your Windows or while booting up there occurs some issues then there is very good chance that the System Files and Folders present  are corrupted.

Windows 10 has been pretty good in handling the files required for proper functioning compared to its older versions however the instability occurs when there is a Windows Update.

So in order to check whether your system has corrupted files Windows 10 has a built-in System File Checker which is a command-line utility that automatically scans and repairs corrupted files if present any, with a proper and stable version.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on using this service:

Implementing SFC:

  1. Click on Windows icon on bottom left-> search Command Prompt.
  2. Right Click on Command-Prompt->Select Run as Administrator also called as elevated command prompt.
  3. Now type sfc /scannow (Note that there is a space in between).
  4. Wait for the process to complete as this might take some time.

After the process gets 100% completed look in the Command Prompt screen

  • If you get a message as displayed below then there were some file errors which were detected and restored.

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. Note that logging is currently not supported in offline servicing scenarios.

  • And if the message is displayed like the one below then there were no problems detected with the files.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

  • If message displayed is like the one below then Windows was not able to repair those files.

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log %WinDir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.

Note: If there were any repairs made by the System File Checker then Restart your device as the SFC might not prompt you to do so.

Did you notice CBS.log which is mentioned whenever errors are detected? This is a LOG file where list of all the corrupted files which were restored or not are saved.

So if you want to check the list of files here’s how you can access it , go to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. If you want to analyse the files check out on  How To analyse the Log Files created by SFC

Conclusion:

The Built-In System File Checker is one the best tools you can use to view corrupted files however if you’re not satisfied you can always try and implement the third party software available online.
