[HOW TO] Restore GRUB bootloader after a new Windows installation

GRUB is a widely used boot-loader for booting Linux-based systems. It lets you choose the OS you want to boot from the list of all operating systems currently installed on your system.

Usually for dual-booting Windows with Ubuntu or any other Linux based OS we install the Windows OS first and then install the Linux OS. But in case if you install Windows over the existing Linux OS then you will not be able to boot inside your Linux OS as Windows boot-loader does not support Linux systems. So to get back your original GRUB boot-loader you will have to make changes in your Master Boot Record.

To do so you will require a live CD to boot Linux. After booting from the live CD run terminal and execute following commands.

sudo grub

find /boot/grub/stage1

This will show you the location of drive on the hard disk where GRUB loader is stored.

root hd(0,0)

setup (hd0)

In place of hd(0,0) type the output you got with the previous command. Now restart your system and you will be able to see your GRUB loader again.

Solve Android SDK failed to find Java.exe error

I was trying to setup Android SDK on my new laptop which is running on Windows 7 Ultimate Р64 bit edition. After installing  Java SE on my machine I tried to install Android SDK manager which resulted in the error shown below.

After googling a bit about this error. I came across various solutions. There are two different working solutions for this depending on your problem. Try both of them.

  1. Right click on “Computer” -> Properties -> Advanced System Settings ->Environment Variables. There in the System variables create a new variable and name it as JAVA_HOME and set its value to JDK folder path. In my case it was “C:\\Program Files\\Java\\jdk1.7.0_05”.¬† Click OK. Try installing SDK again. If this doesn’t work try the next solution.
  2. Go to the path shown in error message. On my machine it was “C:\\Windows\\System32\\Java.exe”. There rename the Java.exe file to Java_1.exe. Now try installing the SDK again. This time it should work. This happens if there are two different versions of java.exe in your system. Android SDK will be unable to determine which one to use. This was the reason on my machine and this one worked for me.

Hope this will be useful for someone.
