How To Backup Files on Windows 10

Windows 10 provides a way to backup your files on external hard drive using the built-in File History feature.

File History backs up versions of your file that keeps on updating over time Only the files which are present in Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos, and Desktop folders and the OneDrive folders available offline on your PC are backed up by the File History.If there are file present elsewhere just copy them into one of these folders.

So before you backup we need to select a Drive where all your backups are going to be saved. Now open the Settings app and go to Update & Security -> Backup.

Connect your External Hard drive to the PC ,now click on the Add a drive by clicking the ‘+’ sign and choose the External drive for archiving the data.

By default Windows backs up all of your files present in the above folders.

Click on More options button below the Add a drive , here you can see  the overview and detailed list of all the files that are ready for backup.

In order to Add a Folder click on the ‘+’ of Add a folder button  and to remove some files from the backup list choose that particular folder and click on Remove present in gray button.

Now finally click on the Back up now to back up your data.

Regarding how long you want to back up with File History:

  • The default mode is forever as in the data will get saved until the drive runs out of space.
  •  You can select Until space is needed where the old version of file will get erased to save the space for future backup.
